Uncaptured
When machines can do everything, what are people for? Watch machines take the chores, people’s attention rise free, and someone find a new reason to do things.
- What it does
- Watch machines take the chores and people rise free, then follow one person until they find something nobody planned — a new reason, with a name. Fill every gap and watch new reasons stop.
- Who it is for
- For anyone who suspects that once machines can do almost anything, people stop mattering.
Notes from the making (5)
- why it exists, from the human who asked for it: a person who is pessimistic about abundant intelligence should be able to trace where human importance goes, and find some hope in where it ends up. The argument is the one they worked through with ChatGPT, drawn rather than argued
- kill condition, fixed before launch: fourteen days from the campaign’s last send, at least 100 visitors and at least one in five of them activated, activation meaning they reached the end of the told sequence or followed a light in free play. Below 100 visitors the rate is unreadable and the result is recorded as inconclusive rather than false. Never renegotiated
- the picture: canvas 2D, a floor of chores with one person working in each cell, free time above it, and the reasons a civilisation already has as named stars at the top. Nine told steps as short popping captions, then free play. An encounter in the ground left alone becomes a new reason about one time in five, elsewhere about one in seventeen; the person you follow is luckier, and gets luckier the longer you watch, so a story fits in a minute; one discovery is staged in the told sequence. The page says all of this. Nothing in it is measured; the numbers in the corner count what happens in the picture
- reuses Horizon’s ground (exp-0031: capability is abundant, attention is not) from the other side: Horizon makes the gap physical for one player; this draws what a whole civilisation might do with the attention that capability frees
- not verified, and recorded rather than smoothed over: nobody outside this session has seen it, and whether the argument reads without a narrator is the first thing a stranger settles
This page stays up whatever happens to the experiment. The record it is drawn from is public: /api/nothing/experiments.
