What this is

An interactive argument about a word. “AI slop” describes something real, but it bundles at least seven separate complaints into one syllable — low creation effort, low quality, high volume, unwanted distribution, a synthetic look, absent intention, and wasted attention. Those are not the same complaint, and only two of them are paid for by anybody other than the maker.

The page separates one variable out of the cultural argument: what happens when the cost of creating something and the cost of consuming it come apart. AI is the most extreme case yet, and the phenomenon is much older — a photograph takes a hundredth of a second and is studied for a century, a cathedral facade takes five hundred person-years and is glanced at for four seconds.
